Living by the sea was commissioned by the Port of Milford Haven, as part of Seafarers Awareness Week 2013 to raise awareness of the contribution made by seafarers working in Pembrokeshire.
In the summer term of 2013, Milford Haven School identified a group of AS Level photography students to take part.
During the summer holidays, a publicity campaign  was started in the local press and through social networks, to recruit 15 people who made their living at sea and would like to get involved.
Over six sessions during the autumn of 2013, a group of twelve students studying at Milford Haven School, worked with Guy Norman from spacetocreate community arts and Associate Film maker Sharron Harris of  Curious Ostrich
Introductory sessions in school provided opportunities to explore visual culture, photography as an art form, critical skills and media literacy, as well as setting up and learning to use the cameras for studio portraits, the production of exhibition quality prints and the use of digital sound recording equipment and interviewing skills.
These initial workshops were followed by three studio sessions in Milford Haven Docks, where the 15 subjects were photographed and interviewed by the young people.
A final session provided an opportunity for the students to select the images for the exhibition, which took place in the Joanna Field Gallery at the Torch Theatre Milford Haven from 6-31 January 2014.
